Dietary Treatment Carine Can Offer

Therapeutic diets treat or manage a medical or physical condition. Good nutrition itself is therapeutic, but in certain conditions or symptoms, certain foods may need to be limited or avoided. My first priority using therapeutic diets is to alleviate symptoms and support healing. Meeting nutritional needs for growth is a key priority in children. Special attention is given to assessing and meeting needs for specific nutrients, either identified as deficient or low or where there are key benefits for the medical or physical condition. Diet interventions for children need careful planning to ensure they are nutritionally adequate, safe, manageable and effective. Trouble shooting, adapting recipes and understanding the changes in symptoms are all part of the review process.

Making long term dietary change can be tricky for everyone, although some children can be very receptive to this, and willing to try change. In weight management for example, this should always considered within a family context, to avoid bringing focus to an individual child, which they may find difficult. Young people also might be exploring dietary change in ways that need extra guidance, or guided self-help to support a medical or health condition.

Because feeding and eating are repeating and often unconscious behaviours, they can be difficult to change, and the reason why simple dietary advice is often ineffective. Carine uses a model she has developed over recent years, she calls structure, nurture and boundaries, which acknowledges the holistic nature that food plays within our lives. It works very well with children and teenagers because they are naturally receptive to learning and respond well to positive attention. Setting realistic goals, meeting nutritional needs, acknowledging and managing difficulties are all part of making successful diet-related behaviour change.
