Appointments

Yes, I offer virtual appointments but like to meet infants, children and teens F2F whenever possible. That could mean a F2F first appointment, and thereafter on-line.

The first appointment is always an assessment appointment. A history of what, when and how much food & drink is consumed, going through a typical day. This provides a good estimate of energy, food groups, key nutrients. We discuss the presenting problem and your goals for the appointment. I will check weight and height, previous growth and refer to growth charts. We talk through dietary treatment options or what behaviour change might look like. We finish by booking a telephone review, to pick up any questions and consider next steps.

No, I do not take blood or carry out allergy testing.

Yes, I regularly work with a range of other health professionals, both independent and NHS.

Ideally yes, and generally always for the first appointment. I like to hear a child’s lived experience.

I suggest a parent is present for all assessment appointments. Some children around puberty engage very well without their parents present, and other do not, and this is more relevant for ongoing work. Perhaps discuss beforehand, an appointment can be split with some time with the child alone if that’s helpful.

Yes, you are welcome to bring other family members. In fact, sometimes it’s very helpful eg. for young children who become restless or energetic during the appointment and need some fresh air. It can sometimes be helpful if one adult wants to focus on the conversation, whilst the other attends to the childs’ needs.

Yes, do please book an FOC exploratory chat to discuss your needs.

Bringing your community child record or red book with growth measurements can be very helpful; do bring a drink and/or snack for young children, or milk or food for observing a baby. Any test results or letters you feel are relevant to our appointment eg. a Paediatrician’s letter, results from recent bloods tests or investigations.

I do not routinely examine a child, although with permission I may demonstrate positions for feeding or movements with infants to alleviate abdominal discomfort.

Yes, unless the child is not happy to be weighed. If a child becomes upset for any reason during weighing, I will not pursue; estimates are possible with weighing parent and child together. I offer head circumference measurement for children up to 2 years of age.

All first assessment appointments have a 15-minute telephone review built in. We book this together at end of the first appointment. All appointments come with an option to book a 15-minute telephone check-in.
